Helpful information about Weddington Middle School athletics and Booster Club programs.

Who is eligible to participate on WMS Booster Club teams?

Students who are in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and attend Weddington Middle School are eligible to try out for WMS athletic teams.

Why do students have to try out for a team?

We understand that one of the most difficult responsibilities a coach has is selecting a team and notifying a student that they did not make the roster.

Some sports are able to accept all student-athletes who have the desire to participate. Unfortunately, many sports have a limited number of roster positions because of available facilities, equipment, coaching resources, safety considerations, or league requirements.

When space is limited, coaches conduct tryouts to evaluate each student's skills, athletic ability, effort, attitude, and readiness for the team.

Our community is fortunate to have the Wesley Chapel-Weddington Athletic Association, commonly known as WCWAA, which offers athletic opportunities in many sports. We strongly encourage students who do not make a WMS team to continue playing, developing their skills, and trying out again the following season.

Who runs the Booster Club?

The Weddington Middle School Athletic Booster Club, or WMSABC, is governed by a Board of Directors elected annually by its members. WMSABC is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and an approved parent organization operating in accordance with Union County Public Schools guidelines.

Although the Booster Club operates independently from the school system, it works closely with Weddington Middle School to support its students and athletic programs.

The Booster Club's mission is to provide and enhance athletic opportunities for Weddington Middle School students, especially for programs that are not fully funded by the school system. These opportunities are made possible through volunteers, fundraising, participation fees, sponsorships, and community support.

WMSABC supports all WMS athletic programs and collaborates with Weddington High School to help prepare student-athletes for the next level of competition.

Why do I have to pay for my child to play?

Union County Public Schools offers several school-supported sports that are funded by the school system and do not require Booster Club participation fees.

However, some middle school sports are provided through the WMS Athletic Booster Club. These programs operate independently and do not receive school-system funding. Participation fees and fundraising are therefore necessary to cover expenses such as:

While not every sport is pay-to-play, the Booster Club continues to support all WMS athletic programs by providing additional resources and enhancements that benefit every Wildcat student-athlete.

Every Booster Club team, event, fundraiser, concession stand, and athletic activity is made possible because members of our community volunteer their time.

To ensure that these programs continue to enrich the experience of Weddington Middle School students, we need parents, families, and community members to help make our programs successful.
